Bangorrhea!!!!!

From the Urban Dictionary:

Bangorrhea
Word of the day: December 09, 2013
1) Overusing exclamation points in a vain and failing attempt to make your writing sound more exciting. Trying to put more “bang” in your prose, but looking instead like you have exclamation point diarrhea.

Aah, makes me think of what one of my writing teachers said (I took her class in creative writing, some six years ago), and she was quoting a former writing teacher of hers (BTW, she’s no spring chicken so the advice clearly goes back a l-o-n-g time): “you’re entitled to two exclamation points; – in your life time.” I’ll try to remember the bangorrhea !!!! (w four excl pts, no less). Cute…..! (OK, so I snuck in another one)

    • I love Lewis Thomas’ comment about exclamation points in his wonderful essay, “Notes on Punctuation”: An exclamation point is like someone else’s child jumping wildly up and down on a couch in the middle of the living room, shouting,’Look at me! Look at me!'” Not an exact quotation–but very close.

  2. Found what I was looking for! Ha ha! See, I suffer from bangorrhea! Thanks for this 🙂
